Exploring the Largest H-E-B in Texas: Located in San Antonio
Updated: Oct 10
San Antonio is now home to the biggest H-E-B, and it's a Texas-sized adventure for grocery lovers. Located at 1604 & Bandera, this 182,000 square-foot store is packed with unique features and shopping experiences that set it apart from your average grocery trip. Here’s a breakdown of what makes this massive store a must-visit.
Inside the Biggest HEB Grocery Store
1. Flaming Bird Restaurant
Craving rotisserie chicken? The Flaming Bird restaurant inside the store serves up flavorful chicken that’s perfect for a quick meal or an easy take-home dinner. The best part is, it's extremely affordable.
2. South Flo Pizza
Pizza lovers, rejoice! South Flo Pizza serves up fresh, made-in-store pizzas, and it also happens to be my favorite H-E-B restaurant. With indoor seating at the front of the store, you can sit down and enjoy your pizza (or Flaming Bird chicken) either before or after you tackle your shopping list.
3. Auntie Anne’s Pretzels
Not every H-E-B has an Auntie Anne’s, but this one does! Whether you’re a fan of the original pretzel or like them covered in cinnamon sugar, Auntie Anne’s is a crowd-pleaser and a great addition for a snack break mid-shopping. I do know several other stores have one inside, including the HEB in Schertz, TX.
4. Self-Serve Café Olé Coffee Machine
Located right off the entrance, this Café Olé self-serve machine is a total game changer. While I didn’t get a chance to try it (they were out of cups!), it offers Breakfast Blend, Breakfast Blend Decaf, and French Blend. It's a pay-and-go system, making it easy to grab your caffeine fix. This might just be the only store that has this machine—it’s certainly the first one I’ve seen!
5. Mia’s Mirror Boutique
Think of Mia’s Mirror as a Francesca’s, but with more Texan flair and a broader appeal. Nestled right inside the store, this boutique offers trendy jewelry, clothing, and accessories with prices ranging from affordable earrings ($8–$20) to higher-end items like Consuela bags. You’ll also find Texas-themed items, shoes, cowboy boots, hats, Sweet Grace Pura scents, and Fredericksburg Farm candles. Whether you're shopping for a fun accessory or a chic gift, Mia's Mirror has something for everyone.
6. Expanded Grilling Section
Grilling enthusiasts, this one’s for you. The Expanded Grilling Section is filled with high-quality grills and smokers like the Char-Griller Smokin’ Pro Barrel Grill & Offset Smoker, the popular Blackstone Griddle, the Oklahoma Joe's Highland Offset Smoker & Grill, and the All Seasons Feeders Charcoal BBQ Pit. It’s a grilling paradise, with everything you need to take your BBQ game to the next level.
7. Large KODI Section
Outdoor lovers will appreciate the large KODI section, filled with coolers and outdoor gear. Whether you're prepping for a tailgate, a camping trip, or just a backyard BBQ, you'll find all the essentials to keep your adventures going.
8. Clothing Section
Yes, there’s a Clothing Section! While most H-E-B locations phased out clothing, this store has kept it, likely due to its massive size. You’ll find casual wear, workout gear, and even some Texas-themed apparel. It’s a bit of a throwback to H-E-B’s earlier ventures into clothing, and it’s fun to browse through.
9. Home Section
For those who love to shop for home décor, the Home Section is well worth checking out. With home accessories, furniture, candles, pillows, mirrors, Texas wall decor and more, it’s easy to spruce up your living space during your regular grocery run.
10. H-E-B Water Tower
What’s a Texas-sized store without a unique landmark? Out front, you’ll find an iconic H-E-B Water Tower, making this location feel like a true San Antonio landmark.
11. Spacious Aisles
One of the first things you'll notice inside is how huge the aisles are. There's so much room to comfortably navigate, even when the store is busy. No more playing bumper carts with other shoppers—just a smooth, stress-free shopping experience.
With all these unique features and over-the-top offerings, the 1604 & Bandera H-E-B is more than just a grocery store—it’s a full-on experience. Whether you’re stopping by for pizza, checking out the boutique, or loading up on grilling gear, you’ll find something new at every turn.
