Everything You Want To Know About The HEB Coffee Shop: Lake Austin's Coffee Spot

Updated: Mar 27, 2023

Introducing Lake Austin's Coffee Spot

Lake Austin’s Coffee Spot is an HEB-operated coffee shop that serves specialty coffee, breakfast tacos, and pastries and baked goods made daily at the store’s in-house bakery. It's located on Level 1 of the new Lake Austin store and is basically a combo counter, sharing space with the South-Flo Pizza.

The first thing you need to know is it does not seem to serve cafe ole coffee. I know this is a major bummer for cafe ole fans, but they serve an equally delicious Italian espresso brand called LavAzza, which you can also purchase in the store.

A fan favorite drink has been the Nutella Latte, hot or iced, and I tried this one when I visited. It has flavors of dark chocolate and hazelnut and it isn't overly sweet. I'm not usually a big mocha fan, but I would 100% order this again.

The other latte flavor that caught my eye is the Oatmeal Latte, which is brown sugar syrup, oat milk, and espresso. I'll be trying that next for sure.

They also offer:

  • 8 syrup options: with vanilla, caramel, and hazelnut being the top 3 most requested.

  • 3 Ghirardelli sauce options: white chocolate, dark chocolate, and caramel

  • 6 dairy options: oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, whole and fat-free.

The beverages pair well with a fresh pastry, baked in-store. The 3 top-selling pastries are chocolate croissants, cinnamon croissants, and pecan danishes.

Breakfast tacos are also served daily from 7 AM - 10:30 AM!

The History of HEB Coffee Shops

Unlike Target, HEB doesn't tend to have coffee shops in many of their stores and this does not go unnoticed by moms in desperate need of a caffeine fix while they shop (like this mom right here.) That being said, aside from the new 'Coffee Spot' there are a few other instances where HEB has sold caffeinated beverages on its premises.

1. The Roastery

Four stores in the Houston area at one time had a coffee shop inside called 'The Roastery". While this seemed to some to be an extension of the HEB brand, it actually was a partnership with Four J Foods from New York-based restaurateurs and Jason Giagrande. Unfortunately, all four closed due to the pandemic in 2021 leaving Houstonians coffee-less once more. You can read more about it here.

2. Rented Out Space

There are a few random HEB locations throughout Texas that do have local coffee shops. In this instance, the coffee shop is renting out space inside the grocery store like the nail salons and eyebrow threading you often see at the front of your store. Mochas & Javas at the HEB in San Marcos is one such example.

3. Central Market

Central Market, the HEB specialty store offers coffee at its locations in the "Central Market Cafe". They also have breakfast tacos loaded with thick bacon inside - definitely worth picking up.

Aside from these three instances, the big question for fans has always been, why not an HEB coffee shop? They have other restaurant brands within their walls like True Texas BBQ and South Flo Pizza. Bring on the coffee, HEB!

So when I saw the plans for the Lake Austin store included what appeared to be an HEB-operated coffee shop, I was VERY excited. And now that I've visited, I will continue to wish every store had one.

Watch my full tour of the Lake Austin store below. It's located at 2652 Lake Austin Blvd.
