We Compared Egg Prices in Texas—Here’s What We Found
With the cost of eggs at record highs and no signs of going down anytime soon, we set out to answer a simple question: Who sells the cheapest eggs?
The answer surprised us.
On Wednesday, Feb. 26, and Thursday, Feb. 27, we visited grocery stores across North Texas to find out how much shoppers are paying for a dozen eggs.
The Criteria
Grade A
Large
Store brand
Dozen eggs (For Sam’s and Costco, where the standard egg package is 18 or 24 eggs, we looked at the cost per egg and ranked the store based on this price.)
To present a fair comparison, we tried to minimize exceptions to these rules, but we noted the few we included. Our findings are just a snapshot of what we’re seeing across Texas, though, so the prices we found in-store may vary online and at your location.
So back to our question:
Where Can I Buy The Cheapest Eggs?
Are you ready?
Drumroll, please… The cheapest eggs are at Trader Joe’s and Sprouts. No, really. Keep reading for all of our findings.

Breaking Down Egg Prices by Store
Understanding the Categories
We divided our findings into two categories:
Traditional eggs – Standard, non-cage-free eggs that are typically the most affordable.
Cage-free eggs – Eggs labeled as “cage-free,” meaning the hens have more space to move around than those in conventional farming. These tend to be pricier but are preferred by some shoppers.
Traditional
Lowest price (tie): HEB (HCF): $4.35 (36 cents/egg)
Lowest price (tie): Costco: $6.39 for 18 (36 cents/egg) ($4.32/dozen) (Limit 3) (Unbranded and Pearl Valley Farms—Kirkland wasn’t available at the three stores we visited)
2. Tom Thumb/Randalls (Lucerne): $4.59 (38 cents/egg)
3. Kroger (Kroger): $4.99 (42 cents/egg) (Limit 2)
4. Target (Good & Gather): $5.49 (46 cents/egg)
5. (Tie) Aldi (Goldhen): $5.97 (50 cents/egg) (Limit 2)
5. (Tie) Walmart (Great Value): $5.97 (50 cents/egg)
Special: Tom Thumb is running a sale through March 25 on Kreider Farms eggs: $3.99 (33 cents/egg).

Cage-Free
Lowest price: Trader Joe’s: $3.49 (29 cents/egg) (Limit 1)
2. Sprouts (Sprouts): $3.99 (33 cents/egg) (Limit 4)
3. Sam’s (Member’s Mark): $9.34 for 24 eggs ($4.67/dozen) (39 cents/egg)
4. Kroger (Simple Truth): $5.49 (46 cents/egg) (Limit 2)
5. H-E-B (H-E-B): $5.88 (49 cents/egg) (AA eggs) (Grade A cage-free eggs are not available.)
6. Target (Good & Gather): $6.19 (52 cents/egg) (Organic)
7. (Tie) Tom Thumb (O Organics): $6.49 (54 cents/egg) (Organic)
7. (Tie) Aldi (Goldhen): $6.49 (54 cents/egg) (Limit 2)
8. Walmart (Marketside): $6.66 (56 cents/egg) (Organic)

Our Takeaways
Best Overall Prices: Far and away, the best price we found during our investigation was at Trader Joe’s, at $3.49 for a dozen eggs. If you have a large family, though, you may find yourself visiting often, since the store is limiting customers to one carton per person right now.
If you can’t make it to Trader Joe’s, your next best bets are Sprouts, with a dozen cage-free eggs priced at $3.99, and, surprisingly, at Tom Thumb/Randalls. Through Tuesday, March 25, you can purchase traditional Kreider Farms eggs for $3.99 (normally, $5.49) using the store’s membership card.

Highest Prices: We were surprised by Walmart’s prices. The behemoth has a strong foothold in the grocery market, but at $5.97 for traditional and $6.66 for organic cage-free eggs, their prices aren’t competitive. Trader Joe’s, Kroger and even Tom Thumb/Randalls, all stores typically associated with higher prices, beat Walmart.

Aldi: We found Aldi prices vary by location, with one store selling their Goldhen cage-free eggs at $4.69 on Wednesday in one city and another selling theirs for $6.49 on Thursday in another (about 20 minutes apart). (We ranked Aldi based on the $6.49 price, since it was more recent and the eggs were in stock at the time of our visit.)
We visited two Aldi locations in DFW—just 30 minutes apart—and found a big price difference. Interestingly, the item number and description were identical at both stores.

In fact, Aldi acknowledges their prices may differ from store to store in the FAQs section on their website, saying: “ALDI considers many factors when setting product prices, including production and operating costs, market conditions, local regulations, consumer demand and the competitive landscape. This may cause our prices to fluctuate from city to city, but rest assured we strive to offer the lowest prices in town.” Furthermore, “We do not match prices because we are generally able to negotiate the best prices for our customers. There may be times when you find a product for cheaper at a different ALDI location.”
This is why Aldi doesn’t advertise their egg prices online and why it’s wise to visit at least a couple of locations in neighboring cities.
